A small research group recently examined the performance of 25 AI “people”, using two large language models created by OpenAI, in an online Turing test. None of the AI bots ultimately passed the test, but all the GPT 3.5 ones did so badly that a chatbot from the mid-1960s was nearly twice as successful as passing itself off as a human—although that’s mostly because people thought the older chatbot was too bad at pretending to be human to be AI.

Following the shocking mass-resignation of publisher Annapurna Interactive’s entire 25-person staff, a new report from IGN has provided more details about the gaming division’s dispute with its parent company, Annapurna Pictures, and its billionaire owner, Megan Ellison. Anonymous former employees shared concerns about the Interactive division’s future under Annapurna Pictures, and claimed that Ellison refused to continue working with them on an agreement to spin off the division. Spokespeople for the parent company claimed that the division’s leader failed to respond to their efforts to move the process forward.

One of the games I’m most looking forward to right now in 2025 is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a unique-looking new dark fantasy RPG being created by Sandfall Interactive. This is not just because it offers a gameplay experience close to that of a classic Final Fantasy or, in combat, a Persona game, of which I am a big fan, nor that the game sports a very distinctive twisted Belle Époque aesthetic. But also because it’s using Unreal Engine 5, and that means its graphics look fantastic, with notably subtle lighting effects and incredibly detailed textures. Eidos Montreal, developer of the Adam Jensen-centric Deus Ex reboots as well as 2021’s Guardians of the Galaxy, announced today that it has laid off 97 employees “from development teams, administration, and support services.” According to a Bloomberg report, the layoffs coincide with the cancellation of an unannounced Deus Ex game the studio was working on. 

Eidos didn’t confirm the existence or cancellation of an unannounced Deus Ex project in its announcement, but Bloomberg describes the game as having been in development for two years, likely starting just before or immediately after the studio’s acquisition by the Embracer Group in 2022.

Let me be very clear right out of the gate, I’m owed absolutely nothing from EA, BioWare or the Dragon Age series. I’m not sure what’s scarier: the idea of being trapped on an oil rig in the Scottish sea with some monstrosity or the fact that we’re now only a few months away from the release of Still Wakes the Deep after nine months of waiting—the passage of time can really be a tough reality check. 

Thanks to a new trailer shown at the Future Games Show Spring Showcase, we not only now know that Still Wakes the Deep is scheduled to release on June 18, 2024 but we also got to see a bit more of the eerie oil rig.
